For anyone growing up in the 1970s, the Wombles were the pioneers of Green politics--spending their days collecting people's rubbish on Wimbledon Common and recycling it to make a wealth of weird and wonderful contraptions. They even enjoyed a highly successful recording career, with a string of hits courtesy of Mike Batt. It is a reflection of their nature, that the "Wombles sound" features a wealth of styles and influences, borrowing left, right and centre--from the Country & Western stylings of "The Orinoco Kid", to the Oriental influences on "Invitation To The Ping Pong Ball", to the sound of the Deep South on "Empty Tidy Bag Blues" and even a touch of classical, in the Hoffman-esque "The Hall Of The Mountain Womble".
