Famous for his enormously influential poetry and plays, Alexander Pushkin is also beloved for his short stories. This collection showcases his tremendous range, which enabled him to portray the Russian people through romance, drama, and satire. The sparkling humor of the five "Tales of Belkin" contrasts with a dark fable of gambling and obsessive greed in "The Queen of Spades" and the masterful historical novella, "The Captain's Daughter," a story of love and betrayal set during a rebellion in the time of Catherine the Great.

This book began as a movie script when I was a film student in 1989. The wish to bring Pushkin's story to light in a way that had not been told before became a labor of love, and although it took longer than I ever expected, I enjoyed every moment. Every time I thought my effort had ended, something new would gnaw at me. There was always one more question that needed to be answered, and with every step-in between two marriages and two divorces, roughly thirteen years as a single mom (until my children were grown and on their own) and a trip to visit Pushkin's home in Saint Petersburg, Russia-Pushkin's story always brought me back to what I love.

The dacha is a sometimes beloved, sometimes scorned Russian dwelling. Alexander Pushkin summered in one; Joseph Stalin lived in one for the last twenty years of his life; and contemporary Russian families still escape the city to spend time in them. Stephen Lovell's generously illustrated book is the first social and cultural history of the dacha. Lovell traces the dwelling's origins as a villa for the court elite in the early eighteenth century through its nineteenth-century role as the emblem of a middle-class lifestyle, its place under communist rule, and its post-Soviet incarnation.

The West has been accused of seeing the East in a hostile and deprecatory light, as the legacy of nineteenth-century European imperialism. In this highly original and controversial book, David Schimmelpenninck van der Oye examines Russian thinking about the Orient before the Revolution of 1917. Exploring the writings, poetry, and art of representative individuals including Catherine the Great, Alexander Pushkin, Alexander Borodin, and leading orientologists, Schimmelpenninck argues that the Russian Empireâ s bi-continental geography, its ambivalent relationship with the rest of Europe, and the complicated nature of its encounter with Asia have all resulted in a variegated and often surprisingly sympathetic understanding of the East among its people.

In this book, the author constructs a new scholarly version of Pushkin as an artist profoundly at odds not only with his society, but also with himself. While investigating the last and unhappy period of Pushkin's biography (1830-1837), e.g. 'The end of Pushkin's life, ' the author restores paradoxical circumstances that eventually led to the poet's death
