The sequence was first published in Blue Book Magazine as a three-part serial in the issues for September, October and November 1918, with The People That Time Forgot forming the second installment. The Land That Time Forgot is the first book in the Edgar Rice Burroughs Caspak trilogy followed by The People That Time Forgot and Out of Time's Abyss. Set in World War I the story begins as a narrative of Bowen J. Tyler, an American passenger on a ship sunk in the English Channel by the U-33, a German U-boat. He is rescued by a British tugboat with survivor, Lys La Rue.
